No more fake! We can now runtime or at dev time apply some lighting that runs at same speed as the basic material, but looking a whole lot better! With this version 1, I’m hoping to fill a gap between devs and designers.

The demo above shows how an ugly scenery like this can be transformed into something almost mysterious with this code. So imagine what you’ll get with this code in your hands! ?

There are tons of stuffs I want to add/improve to that one, but so far I’ve already added a few features such as:

  • Extended TraceEvents.
  • Getters for exports of the bitmapdata’s to disc in Air or F10.
  • Single materials: the same material can be set only once, the engine does apply new ones on itself.
  • Multiple lights: fully compatible with existing code.
  • Scene ambient light value.
  • Default material: if a Mesh object doesn’t have any material set of the wrong type, it generates a default one.
  • Alpha’s are respected.
  • Chunk process.
  • Object3D support: this means you can pass a whole container populated with Meshes or objectContainer3D’s objects.
  • And of course ease of use: Believe it or not, this is a one liner!!

    This version 1 of the LightPrebaking class will be added soon to the Away3D trunk, I need to do some clean up’s before.
    In future posts, I’ll try to show more code and hopefully some progress!

    Away3D 2.2: RailAway Express

    At the risk of starting something of a tradition for our releases, it’s time once again to take you for a little ride. RailAway Express is a ticket for a unique travel into the realm of Away3D 2.2 and it’s new runtime model generation and animation features. Its probably my last Flash 9 demo too.

    Almost everything you see along your journey in this 780 kb all in demo is code generated.

    A special thanks goes to Andre Michelle and Joa Ebert for their help on the sound dynamics.

    Away3D 2.0: Green Planet

    After the Temple demo, I wanted to push the limits even further with something I’ve dreamed of making in Flash for a very long time: A full 3D immersion on another world!

    To build such project you need mmm… a whole bunch of stuff!
    Many hours of work later with the team, I’m very proud to announce with a demo unlike anything else, the release of a supercharged engine: The 2.0 version of Away3D!


    Handling the rendering of over 13000 polygons, 16 animated and interactive models with surface tracking, and a cool soundtrack composed by Atom(bang).


    I hope our new release and this atmospheric oddessey may bring out
    the explorer in you!

    Away3D Temple: a low kb journey

    Why don’t you add a monster in there? Can you shoot at something? Can you see under water? That’s what most people told me while I was busy writing this demo.
    My answer: NO!

    I have 4 reasons for that:
    The first one is to give a sequel to one post (the maze one) where I’ve suggested that there are ways to do Flash3D without having to load kilometers of data, if you have the right tools.
    This demo weights only 204 kb, is fully code generated, combines Flash’s power to reuse, alter, draw sources and the latest Away tools.


    The beautiful ambiance music composed by Atom(bang) is externally loaded, weights 8 times the amount of the swf itself but enhance greatly the mysterious feeling you get while visiting the temple.

    The second reason is that there is no better way to develop tools than using them yourself in a real case.

    We are busy building tutorials and the source of this demo will be soon available across a series of tutorials soon to be found on the away3d site. From technical to project workflows. That would be my third reason.


    I must say that I almost couldn’t resist to add the requested features and start building an extended base for a game environment. But again this piece is just an exercise, probably with some hidden bugs or stuffs that could be improved. I hope it shows enough what can be done if you set the right combination in your project.


    Oh, almost forgot the last reason: have fun and introduce the 1.9.4 version of Away3D!
